Video Friday

A new feature for your lucky eyes and ears!

The day may change at some point, but every week we’ll try to bring you a good ten minutes’ of gaming videos that we think you’ll enjoy.

Here goes, then!

First up, we give in to our fanboy-ish tendencies. The guys at GameVideos go over the latest GTA IV trailer with a fine-tooth cyber-comb. The result: a reassuring feeling that someone out there is actually nerdier than you (plus you won’t have to go home and do it yourself, later)

Next up it’s Ben ‘Yahtzee’ Croshaw’s review of Fable. Mainly because it’s rather comical. Okay, entirely because it’s a ruddy good larf.

Holy Versus, Puck Man

mykthedud | March 28, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

PizzaIf you didn’t know this, then let us tell you now that Namco Museum, recently released on the DS, has the very brilliant Pac-man Vs. Originally released as a freebie with R:Racing on the GameCube, the few people that bought it probably played it more than the driving game - although only after unlocking the shower scene - it was at the time in doubt if it was ever going to be released in the UK. I have seen this pack for the princely sum of £25 minus a penny and it contains some other games as well. What? You think I should? But who cares? Its worth the money by itself.

OK. OK. You also get Pac-Man (probably the original - no bad thing as it’s timeless and everything), The Tower Of Druaga (played it on MAME and I think its slow and not very good. In fact I always thought it was the name of another game, Dragon Buster, which is ace), Mappy (good platform bouncy game), Dig Dug II (if I have played this I don’t remember what the difference is between this and the first one. Speaking of the first one, whenever I played it on my mate’s 2600 I was always wanting to play Mr. Do on his Dragon 32 instead) plus shoot-em-up lovelies Galaga, Galaxians and Xevious (the latter being a particular fave of mine. And no, Nintendo, I wasn’t going to spend a tenner on it for my GBA, as much as I like it).

So there you have it; one rare as rockin’ horse-shit brill game with 7 freebies. Nice!

Sony IPs vaguely dated?

Daniel Mitchell |

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Tired of gunning through the epic war against space villains? Tough Luck because it appears that most of this years exclusives are exclusively that. With Epic/Microsoft’s Gears of War on the horizon it only seems fit that we now hear how Sony plan to oppose them. Gaming blog Videogamer.com have got their hands on some juicy information which is sure to please the PS3 side of the war, even if it is something which has been expected all along. They have found what appears to be Sony’s rough pencil sketches depicting the dates which they aim to release 3 exclusives in the UK this year, 2 of them Sci-Fi shooters.

To find out the dates, hop over to the full article. Read the rest of this entry »

We can be Heroes… Halo 3 map pack free!

Daniel Mitchell | March 26, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Major Nelson has informed Xboxers that the Halo 3 Heroic Map pack, containing 3 new multiplayer maps, is now available for free from the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Standoff
The symmetrical valley of Standoff, with its entrenched bases and fields of boulders is ideal for mid-sized objective and Slayer game types.

Rat’s Nest

The vast, labyrinthine passages of the Rat’s Nest bring something completely new to the multiplayer experience: an indoor vehicle paradise. Strongly influenced by the Campaign mode, this map is ideal for big team battles.

Foundry

Foundry is the ultimate Forge map. Players can edit every single object in this voluminous industrial warehouse, placing stairways, walls, bridges, and tunnels to create an entirely new play space and build almost any kind of map imaginable.

Exiting stuff, although it’s a shame that Halo 3 is such an average game.

April 2008: Game(s) to look forward to

Daniel Mitchell |

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

March has seen quite a few high-quality releases, with a few more to come before the end of the month. Because of this, you may think that the number of releases may slow down for April. If you think this, you are wrong and should be shot. If you think that there is only one game worth picking up coming out this month then you should also be shot. Not as much as those who think there are no games, but shot nonetheless. The number of released this month may be short but the quality means that April is most definitely a sweet month for gaming this year. There isn’t just one game coming out this month, but there is a game. A highly anticipated game. A game which, if it were released any other time than now would be game of the year, nay, century. Read on as we reveal the cracking line up for April. Read the rest of this entry »

Don’t hate the player, hate the industry

Dave Barlow |

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

After buying a second-hand PSP, GoYUK Editor Dave Barlow tells us why it’s fantastic to be a cheapskate.

Cheap skateOne of the best things about jumping ship to a console fairly late in the game is that one can cherry-pick from the finest games to have been made during the console’s comparatively long life - most of which are available for a few quid, since they’re supposedly out of date! You won’t catch me buying Ridge Racer at full RRP, no sir.

As an example (and an exercise in my own smugness), here are the games which currently occupy the pile next to my bed:

  • Metal Gear Acid - £5
  • CRUSH - £6
  • Patapon - $20 (about £10.50)
  • Tekken: Dark Resurrection - with console
  • Sega Genesis Collection - with console

Now, when you consider that I paid about £70 for the PSP (with games!), we’re laughing. For under £100, I’ve bought a console which is still very relevant, as well as what I consider to be some of the top games for that system, with a few pennies spare for Loco Roco when I see it.

The best time to jump on the 360 bandwagon?

Dave Barlow | March 24, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Master ChiefWell, the 360’s been around for a while now and all of the big franchises have hit the market. This is epitomised in Amazon UK’s latest 360 bundle deal. For £184.98, you can get the console itself (Xbox 360 Arcade), Halo 3 and a pre-order of Grand theft Auto IV (just enough time left for you to complete the third instalment of Master Chief’s exploits before the Greatest Game Ever Made destroys your social life, then).

If you’ve been on the fence about whether to get a “next-gen” gaming console, or you think your PS3 looks lonely on its own in front of your TV, this might be the time to find out just what you’ve been missing all this time.

Hit the link and read the blurb on the page to find out how to bundle these top two titles in with your new 360.

Have More Videogames, HMV Sale!

Daniel Mitchell |

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Well, looks like HMV are having another sale (any excuse, right?) and so far it looks better than their January sale (which, to be honest wouldn’t take a whole lot of effort). They have some half decent prices on a few games though at the moment, with Burnout Paradise for PS3 at only £29.99 and Stranglehold for Xbox 360 for £12.99.

Follow us for our favourite prices… Read the rest of this entry »
