BBC Wii all over your TV

World broadcasting icon BBC has announced that they have secured a deal with Nintendo, aiming to make it possible for people to find traces of television in their Wii. More specifically the deal will let Wii owners to use the BBC iPlayer with their waggle.

From the BBC News site…

The iPlayer on the Wii is currently being tested and the BBC expects to release more test versions in late 2008. An early version of the service is available from 9 April. It is only available in the UK to licence-fee payers.

The iPlayer will be accessible via the internet channel on the Wii console. The BBC said a message would be sent to Wii owners to alert them to its availability.

The news comes as the BBC releases the latest viewing figures for the iPlayer…

We at GameOnYou think this is a fantastic idea. If BT is trying IPTV on the Xbox 360 then it only makes sense for something similar to happen on a rival console. Too bad for BT and Microsoft then, that its a free service being released on a console more suited to living rooms. The service will allow users to download and stream BBC shows, old and new (although mostly new) to their TV sets which sounds lucrative - only problem really is that the Wii is already coming under strain in terms of storage options which will only be made worse by this (it’s already bad enough with WiiWare) and we’re also unsure of how the RAM will hold up with this (it’s bad enough with YouTube vids on the web browser).

The BBC iPlayer for Wii should be available now on your Wii console and if you didn’t already know that it just goes to show that you don’t play enough games, or don’t own a Wii. Or a computer. Or a TV.

Sounds good to me! I use the iPlayer quite a lot as it is, mainly to watch Click.

BBC blogger Darren Waters has written that Sony adding iPlayer support to its PS3 browser is “almost inevitable.” Good news.
