A Buyer’s Conundrum: Call of Duty: World at War -vs- Left 4 Dead

codwawl4d

You’ve got £30-40 set aside to get your shooter fix; which one of these recent releases should you shell out for? This is the conundrum we face.

Join me, if you will, in drawing a mental Venn diagram comparing overlapping aspects of both games, and the aspects which make each game stand out.

Comparisons

  • Production value; both games run on rock-solid engines and have been honed doubtless many times over.
  • Intense, sweaty, edge-of-seat action. In a good way. Honest.
  • Longevity; CoD: WaW’s levelling and perk/weapon unlock system will be similar to that of CoD 4, so will keep players returning again and again. L4D’s “AI Director” does an admirable job of ensuring that, even though you’re essentially replaying the same levels over and over, no experience is ever exactly the same. Plus, it’s Valve. They fooking love providing extra content as the months go by.
  • Bloody good… ness; both titles are in the upper echelon of shooter releases this year, hence why we’re trying to decide which one to buy.

Grab yourself an EndWar batallion

Whilst strutting our stuff around the show floor at the Eurogamer Expo, we managed to score a few codes to unlock battalions within Tom Clancy’s EndWar.

I’m pretty sure these are the same battalions playable at the show itself; I was too busy basking in the surprisingly weighty novelty of ordering tanks around with a few simple commands. It’s difficult to discern just how deep EndWar goes as an RTS beyond the genuinely revolutionary voice-control system, but it was the surprise of the show for me, as frankly I wasn’t expecting to give a damn.

Anyway, on to the goodness!

Preorder Far Cry 2 at HMV, get 4 free missions

FrogBiscuit

As part of HMV’s initiative to expand further into the gaming market, they are offering an exclusive deal where if you preorder Far Cry 2 with them (due out this Friday), you get 4 exclusive missions for free with it. These missions promise to set the scene for Far Cry 2 and act as a prologue to the game, giving you some extra background information on the scenario in which you will play.

It is to be assumed that the game will come with an unlock code which you can enter on Xbox Live, PSN store or whatever they’re planning for the PC. The missions will presumably be available as DLC further down the line.

This is a UK exclusive for HMV so you won’t get it anywhere else. We do not know whether this is being offered in other territories, but keep an eye out.

Details on the individual missions over the break…

Hot on the heels of a credit crunch my TV keeps saying is occuring, Amazon have slashed the amount of pennies we have to spend to qualify for free delivery, in an attempt to loosen our e-purse strings.

Preorder Saints Row 2 and get a whole loada win

Saints Row

If you preorder Saints Row 2 from one of a number of stores at the moment then you’re getting a lot more than you bargained for. No, you’re not going to receive a sharp poke in the eye… this surprise is much better. If you preorder Saints Row 2 from just about any retailer at the moment, you’ll be getting a nifty code for two free, exclusive in-game vehicles to cruise around the streets and skies of Stillwater in.

I’m not usually a big fan of companies doing this sort of thing, but this time it’s special… as if you preorder Saints Row 2 from one of numerous retailers then you’re also getting…

best

A REALLY TINY MOTORBIKE!

and a Gyrocopter which nobody cares about. Oh, you also don’t need to preorder to get this special little freebie as it’s redeemed via use of a cheat code - so don’t worry fellow cheapskates. Hit the jump for a video of the Pee Wee in action.

Worried about not being able to find a Wii M+ controller? Web 2.0 is here to save the day!

 wiimplus

We’ve just received a carrier pigeon. Tied around its quivering, bloody ankle was a note reminding us that, hey, sometimes Wii accessories sell out.

Next on the list of tosh accessories that parents across the country will be willing to kill for come Spring 2009, is the Wii Motion Plus controller (which I insist that we now call Wii M+), the controller upgrade which will take us one step closer to being able to actually swing a lightsaber (read: obscene sex toy in Japan) with accurate on-screen response.

Here to help us are the fine folks behind WiiCompare.com, and of course the kind people who take part in keeping stock levels updates.
