Games Of September 2008

Daniel Mitchell | August 25, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

seal-fo-approval Is it that time again already? What? It’s been that time more than once over the past couple of months? Whatever. Shut Up.

September is going to be another best month of the year, so you’d better secure lots of overtime at work, or you’re going to have to sacrifice eating on Tuesdays. There are that many great games coming out, I’m sorry but it’s true. I’m going to have to do it… again. That’s correct. This month gets another (much coveted) GoY Seal Of Approval™.

E3: The Conferences

Dave Barlow | July 16, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Got a full day in which to sit and absorb the main events from E3? Well guess what, you can do so right here. With thanks to Gamespot, who actually live in America, rendering it much easier for them to actually be there. Obviously.

Ahem, the videos!

Mini-review: Watch the last 2 minutes, it’s the only bit of decent news in the whole show…

Mini-review: Nintendo in self-indulgent stories about their own families shocker!

All in all, not particularly exciting, strangely. We’ll be bringing you any videos from the show floor that catch our eye as we dig through the flood of content hitting the intertubes right now.

Have a fun day with that! I’ll just be here in the corner if you need me.

E3: Nintendo Press Conference Summary

Dave Johnson | July 15, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

With E3 well under way today was Nintendo’s turn to flaunt their wares, but first they decided to hit back at microsoft’s announcement of out selling both Nintendo and Sony in the console war, by claiming they were actually the one’s outselling Sony and Microsoft. We expect a similar announcement from Sony very soon.

Nintendo did finally get around to making the following announcements:

Wii Games

  • Animal Crossing: City Folk, the first Wii game to take advantage of new hardware WiiSpeak.
  • Shaun White Snowboarding, designed for use with the WiiFit balance board.
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a standard beat em’ up with lightsabres.
  • Rayman Raving Rabbids: TV Party, simply more mini-game madness
  • Call of Duty: World At War
  • WiiSports Resort, a beach sport game supporting another piece of new hardware Wii Motion Plus.
  • WiiMusic, play a variety of instuments how you like, in your own time.

Nintendo DS

  • Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades
  • Spore Creatures
  • Pokemon Ranger 2: Shadow of Alma
  • Grand Theft Auto: China Town Wars

Hardware

  • WiiSpeak, a set top microphone that will pick up all voices in the room allowing for group to group communication without the need for headsets. Only currently supported by Animal Crossing: City Folk.
  • Wii Motion Plus, A small unit that plugs into the bottom of your WiiMote that enhances motion detection and more accurate interpretations of the movement on screen. Currently only supported and supplied with WiiSports Resort it also includes an extended sleeve for your WiiMote.

Nintendo also unveiled plans you gradually change the DS into essentially a PDA, so that it can be seen as necessary to carry with you as a mobile phone, with the ability to access train timetables, local restaurant guides, etc.

More E3 news to come.

Debut: C.O.R.E.

Daniel Mitchell | June 30, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Many gamers who own a DS are entirely satisfied with the game catalogue and what Ninty’s pocket handheld has to offer. Many people though, on the other hand may have been looking for something more action-oriented and First Person Shootery (despite the critically acclaimed Metroid Prime: Hunters).

Well, unfortunately for you folks, you’re going to have to keep looking as this first-time effort from obscure developer, No Way Studios looks just like a segue between the original Quake and Star Wars: Dark Forces (with a sprinkling of Duke Nukem).

Brilliant news if you live in the 90s and hardly worthy of everyone else’s attention.

Unless you live in the 80s, or 70s, or 60s, or…

Civilisation Revolution Demo Review

Daniel Mitchell | June 15, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

GrrIf you, like me have managed to stay afloat the recent tsunami of video-game releases then you should know what Civilisation Revolution is (Yes, I’m spelling it the correct way). If not then you’ll at least know what Civilisation is, even if you’ve never used your PC for gaming. Oh, and it makes any difference to you, I played this demo on the Xbox 360.

Civilisation Revolution is the latest incarnation of the popular Civilisation building turn-based strategy game created by brainy man Sid Meier for the PC. On the PC, the game has enjoyed 4 popular releases (not including the fantastic spin-off Call to Power entries), with the latest bringing a handful of new features to the table and, if anything, both making the game more accessible to newcomers. Unfortunately they’ve de-Spocked the console game.

In Civilisation Revolution the PC’s key formula is not disturbed. More, in fact altered to serve as a somewhat supplementary game to the PC’s Civilisation 4. This stems from the game’s further increased accessibility and ease of use, while still retaining the ability to make you think. Many would argue that this caters to the casual gamer and, while I partially agree with this argument I feel that it is more of a game catering to the casual side of the PC, or Strategy gamer’s gaming personality.

We don’t normally get excited about boxart, but…

Dave Barlow | June 10, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

It’s Metal Slug! A new one!

Those of you who suffer the podcast will know that I spent about a week working through Metal Slug Anthology on Wii, when I should have been working on my dissertation. And I’d do it again, I tell you!

If you’re looking for a traditional shooter that’s not too hard (that’s right Contra, I’ve stopped loving you), and has a decent amount of character, hopefully this one on the DS will be for you. IGN have a preview if you’re intrigued.

Portal on my DS? Like, sweet.

Dave Barlow | June 2, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

While this news may not apply to every DS owner, there is a homebrew out there which effectively plays like the 2D flash game, only with its own cartoony stylings.

We’re off to download it and pass around our solitary original DS in the GoY dungeons, like the crackpipe that it is.

<

Sneak a slice from DS Fanboy for the original story and a quick guide to possibly getting your DS playing homebrew, and tell us what you think of the game!

Brand new, first ever Prince of Persia screens!

Daniel Mitchell | May 2, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

French gaming magazine Joypad have secured an exclusive, bearing the first ever in-game pictures from the new Prince of Persia game. It looks… different. Different in a good way, that is. It appears to have the art style of Okami (sloshed around with a bit of Street Fighter 4) meets Ico meets Twilight Princess and the amalgamation of styles has resulted in what looks to be an amazing new game from Ubisoft Montreal. Scans of the feature have been lovingly uploaded by twobrothersandasister.com and we’ve uploaded crops of the individual in-game screens for those who don’t read French!

This visual reboot appears to signal a reboot in the series in general, with signs hinting that the next game will be titled “Prince of Persia”. This is in no way a bad thing. Throughout the previous games the art-style was starting to tire, and the plot was starting to wear a little thin. We have really high hopes for this new game, and we look forward to some hints at the gameplay itself (which may be described in the article. If any of our readers can read French we’d appreciate if you drop us a line if there’s any useful info there).

Games of May 2008

Daniel Mitchell | April 26, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Well, If anybody’s reading this (read: those who don’t have a copy of GTA4) it appears that May is our calm after the storm, with little in the name of jaw-dropping titles to be released. That is not to say that there aren’t any good games though, oh no, there are quite a few games to look out for this month. As the list may feel a little sterile we’re going to add something new into the mix. This month we’re going to not only deliver you our definitive list of games to look forward to but also an list of games to avoid. Here goes nothing…
