Diababblo Three!

Daniel Mitchell | June 30, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

That’s right… Diababblo Three, the next chapter in a series of real-time place-crawling RPGs, all of which culminate in a standoff between you and the mighty demonic insurance saleswoman, Diababblo - in which you must fight for your life as she throws everything she’s got at you in a poor attempt to persuade your hero to buy ridiculous policies (the more difficult battles involve slightly plausible policies such as Insurance insurance) has been announced!

This revelation is sure to please the fans of the series… especially the who like the games (and consequentially, not themselves). Along with the revelation (made by developer Blizzard, makers of educational video-games such as Words of Warcraft), came a few videos, which we’ve provided for your viewing pleasure… Enjoy.

Games to play before you die

Dave Barlow | June 19, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Hey folks, we’re trying a funky new feature out, which… in fact, it’s pretty self-explanatory.

We’ve created an Amazon Store. If anyone is interested in buying any of the games suggested, please do it through the store if possible. We get a percentage of your money from Amazon which will go towards the running of the site!

It might look a bit ugly at the moment, but we’ll keep adding to it as we go and let you know of any updates. Also, if you have any games that you’d like to add, please email us with your reasons why someone should play your suggested game(s) at least once before they snuff it.

I’ll add a link somewhere on the site so you can always find it in the future.

Thanks,

Dave

GameOnYou: Proud to be cheap

Dave Barlow | June 4, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Cheap and ProudIn a study based on <10 males aged 15-40, the GoYUK staff can officially announce that buying older games is now considered socially acceptable.

In an age where consoles cost more than an affordable car, it may be comforting to know that you’re not alone when you’re being tempted by Gamestation’s “4 for £20″ deals. There has been much discussion in the GameOnYou camp about, well, basically not being able to afford all the games we’d like to.

From gamer to gamer, we’d like to extend our unwashed, under-nourished hands to our beloved readers as we enter into a new age of cheapskatery, and being just that little bit more picky about which games to purchase.

Yes, there are some instances where we must have a game on release day (read: GTA IV, Boom Blox, Football Manager, Brothers in Arms). But titles such as Assassin’s Creed, Army of Two and the Battlefield: Bad Company saga have led us to rise and up say NO.

NO, we will not pay “full price” (whoever decided that all games should come out at £40 anyway?) for something that took 3 blokes and cat two months to shit out. NO, we will not fall for your pre-release hype and/or advertising and we would suggest that you should spend your money on titles that deserve it. Yes, Ubi, we’re talking to you. NO, we will not let games companies walk all over us and hold back content that should rightfully be in the game. And finally, NO we will not shell out our cash on games just because there’s “nothing good out for a few weeks”.

It’s not all doom and gloom though. The growth of the likes of Steam and XBLA mean that, more than ever, gamers have the ability to go looking for something outside the mainstream. What makes more sense; popping into town to pick up a 5-hour action game at £30, or paying less than a tenner to buy a puzzle game on Steam that will keep you entertained, off-and-on, for weeks to come?

We feel so strongly about this issue that we’ve somewhat changed our outlook. From this point on, we’ll throw a suitable price-tag on to each game review or quick playtest stating what we think the game is worth. That includes if we don’t think you should ever buy a game, regardless of the price.

As well as changing our review system (more details to come soon), we’re also starting a new feature, tentatively titled ‘Pocket Money’, where we’ll put together a monthly shopping basket worth £50 full of games that we think deserve your money. Old, new, “leet”, casual - we’ll throw together a mixed bag of quality at a suitable price.

To get us started, here’s something to whet your newly-born discerning appetite:

Replay: Gitaroo Man

Manga Ben | May 17, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

“Extra, extra, read all about the best burgers in town from all around, people from around world come and get it; the line goes around like a merry go round”

That hopefully has caught your attention. Some of you gaming geeks out there will recognise these lyrics from the popular cult game, Parapper the Rapper 2. You should also remember that Parappa is a rhythm game. The Parappa series gained a cult following which I am secretly a member of so it only seems fit that I am reviewing a game that has just as big a following. The game I am talking about is… Gitaroo man, Publisher Koei’s first foray into the Rhythm game genre.

The story is centred around a shallow nob-head who calls himself U-1, a translation from the original Japanese name, Yu-ichi. The plot involves guitars that save the world, a love triangle, a mad bastard hell bent on world-domination… you get the picture. Also there’s an archetypical “cute” sidekick animal, with an annoying voice (Which is strangely reminiscent of Inspector Gadget’s - Ed), helping/hindering you along the way.

First impressions are good, with a wacky intro the sort you’d expect from a game strictly aimed at the Japanese market, similar to the like of Parappa, Um Jammer Lammy (which came from the creators of Parappa) and We love Katamari. The style is similar to Parappa, with a more Anime/Manga advertising edge. The game throws you straight in at deep end with a brief tutorial, then pack your bags and off to your first opponent.

Steam funfunfun!

Dave Barlow | May 14, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

SteamYo all,

a couple of us were having an intellectual - yet still down-to-earth - conversation last night (feel the power of my hyphens, and equally, my dashes!), and we concluded that we should all play some sort of game on Steam together. Because that’s what sisters do.

To that end, Daniel and I have ordered Dawn of War. I’ve also bought Orange Box so I can get my arse handed to me repeatedly whilst simultaneously being appeased by the jovial, cute visuals.

If you wish to join us in our exploits, you can get Dawn of War with the Winter Assault expansion pack for $20 on Steam, or you can pay £17.99 for the whole anthology on play.com like we did. Plus if anyone has any suggestions for Steam games that we can all get into (read: “afford”), feel free to email me and I shall spare your life. Something that’s either super-arcadey and addictive (with multiplayer), or something that we could employ a bit of teamwork to play preferably.

Don’t forget to look up the GameOnYou Steam Community as well (search for GoYUK), and send us some abuse/join the group.

Dave

Dave = The ghost of GameOnYou

Dave Barlow | April 30, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Hey folks, sorry about the lack of activity recently.

I’ve been doing my dissertation, see! The last of my written work is in on Tuesday, so normal service should resume after that - including the podcast! In the next few days we’ll release (better late than never) Episode 3, which I’ve been neglecting to edit.

In the meantime, Allan’s doing a stellar job of keeping up the news output! Egg custard prize for Allan!

Review: Rainbow Six Vegas 2

Daniel Mitchell | April 24, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

http://gameonyou.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/rainbow.jpgLet me start off by saying that I do not own this game but rather, I rented it from Blockbuster (they do 7 day rentals now). Now that’s out of the way, let me reassure you that I have completed the Single Player story mode (albeit coop with a friend) and I have played a few terrorist hunts with a friend also. So back on topic, this is a review of the sequel to the immensely successful and immensely awesome Rainbow Six Vegas.

In Vegas 2 you play the role of an operative within Rainbow Six (a top secret special operations unit set through collaboration between NATO states) called Bishop. Bishop looks like… well, the thing is you decide. Yes, unlike the original there is character customisation, and apart from facial features it’s surprisingly deep. The first thing you’re greeted with when you boot up the game is a character creation screen, where you get to choose uniform (with some armour choices affecting game-play e.g. heavy armour will make you slower but able to absorb more lead), clothing, camouflage, choice of weapons and facial features - All of which can be changed at multiple occasions

This becomes your avatar throughout the game, for single and multiplayer modes. What you may have expected even less is that not only does your avatars appearance follow you throughout the game but there is also an experience system in place, which records statistics about everything you do in the game. you get experience for killing enemies and you get an increased amount if you put your experience and known tactics to use when confronting a bad guy (such as long range kills, shooting through cover or close quarters. More experience unlocks new weapons, armour and clothing to give your character.

New review system

Dave Barlow | April 15, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

JudgesAlong with the podcast, we’ve also been beavering away at a review system that we hope will make a lot more sense to the average gamer than some systems out there. Feel free to leave a comment about the system if you think it stinks. Or indeed if you think we’re critical geniuses.

Catch the details after the post break, or go to the About page. Read the rest of this entry »
