A Buyer’s Conundrum: Call of Duty: World at War -vs- Left 4 Dead

codwawl4d

You’ve got £30-40 set aside to get your shooter fix; which one of these recent releases should you shell out for? This is the conundrum we face.

Join me, if you will, in drawing a mental Venn diagram comparing overlapping aspects of both games, and the aspects which make each game stand out.

Comparisons

  • Production value; both games run on rock-solid engines and have been honed doubtless many times over.
  • Intense, sweaty, edge-of-seat action. In a good way. Honest.
  • Longevity; CoD: WaW’s levelling and perk/weapon unlock system will be similar to that of CoD 4, so will keep players returning again and again. L4D’s “AI Director” does an admirable job of ensuring that, even though you’re essentially replaying the same levels over and over, no experience is ever exactly the same. Plus, it’s Valve. They fooking love providing extra content as the months go by.
  • Bloody good… ness; both titles are in the upper echelon of shooter releases this year, hence why we’re trying to decide which one to buy.

Zombie Taster

left4dead

Multiplayer zombie shooter Left 4 Dead has been receiving considerable hype from the PC crowd lately, and if you want to see what all this fuss is about a demo is coming soon. Valve super legend Gabe Newell has confirmed both the 360 and PC versions will be getting demos, telling Videogamer.com

“I think it’s going to contain the first part of one of the campaigns. I think it’ll probably be Hospital but I’m not sure. That’s a decision that Doug Lombardi is making”

He also added that you’ll be able to play both online co-op and single player with bots. This will hopefully go someway to making up for the game’s recent delay, and provide a good taster of what is shaping up to be one of this winter’s most excting prospects.

Expect the demo to hit sometime in October and the full release on Nov 21st.

Team Fortress 2: Meet the Heavy All Over Again

The HeavyIf you thought Valve’s Pyro update was big then you’re in for a real treat. Not only is the Heavy receiving 3 new unlocks and 35 personalised achievements but valve has gone one better and will also be including cp_steel - a new map created by community member, Jamie ‘Fishbus’ Manson - and another new map based on the “Payload” game mode.

Oh, but don’t think Valve is stopping there - quite the contrary. In fact, above all of this new content, they will also be releasing a brand new game mode accompanied by 5 new maps designed specifically for the mode.

I don’t think anyone can say Valve isn’t good to us after this update. Head on over to the Team Fortress Developer blog and the Heavy update site for your daily updates on this upcoming patch!

Cheap Thrills: Penny Arcade etc etc

I refuse to write its full name. Some might say that’s because I can’t remember the full title and can’t be bothered Googling it. Those people would be correct, but I’d still have to put a hit out on them.

If you’re into your Final Fantasy-esque battle systems, and like the sound of a bit of nerdy comedy thrown into the mix, get theeself on Steam, son. They’re doing it for $9.99 this weekend (roughly three pints).

Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-s- Ah forget it, you’ve stopped reading anyway

GoY would pay: £8.00

Best Price: approx. £7.00 after tax
