Following on from the news that EA will be charging players per bullet fired in Battlefield: Bad Company (OK, that might be a slight exaggeration, but head over to Sarcastic Gamer for Lono’s rant on the subject), EA seem to be taking an entirely different approach with Battlefield: Heroes.
All along, we have been promised a fun, frantic, accessible but best of all free FPS. This came in to question recently when the dev team mentioned in a magazine interview that they would be shipping the game with just two maps. Speculation and internet fever took over at this point, with many proclaiming that EA would start charging for maps after they’d hooked you in with the supposedly “free” game.
Thankfully, the developers have put our fears to rest with a recent blog post, which states that there will be more maps in the future, but we won’t have to pay for them: “Firstly, we have no plans for selling maps for Battlefield Heroes. Our game design and our business model is designed around the fact that 95% of the people playing the game never pay a penny. We want this to be the best free game experience online and we will be delighted for 95% of you to play the game for hundreds of hours, fully level up your character and enjoy a long expansive experience without spending any money at all, ever.
