Rumour - PS2 Games Coming to PSN?

Sean Millar | June 30, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Earlier today, I (ed: Read: someone at Kotaku) stumbled upon a post over at the N4G Forums which basically included the picture above which shows that PS2 Games May be coming to The PSN store in the near future….

From what I can gather using my incredibly large brain, Sony may possibly be unveiling this at E3 which isn’t so far off… Even though the picture could quite easily have been Photoshopped, it is starting to seem like an exciting prospect and is also a way to work around the problem of the non-backward compatible PS3s. I guess We will just have to wait and see…

Ed: It’s also nice to know that Metal Gear Solid 2 (ie. not the one where you lie in grass and get shot like a tit) will be available for the very-much-competitive price of £12.99!)

PS3 firmware 2.4 brings long-awaited features…?

Sean Millar | June 4, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

It has been heavily rumoured that PS3 owners can hope to see in-game XMB and trophies (Xbox 360-style achievements) in the next firmware update…

At the moment, Sony have only announced that it will be out this summer and have not announced an official release date yet, but “unnamed sources” from Holland say it will be here on the 18th of this month (June).

I will now run through some features we should expect to see in this highly anticipated update:

  • Full In game-XMB
  • Custom In Game Soundtracks
  • Trophies
  • Improved Audio/Video Communication

Videogaming247 Has also acquired some information on how compatible current/old games will be with the new in-game XMB feature amongst other things…

  • Sony’s currently going through PS3’s library to check whether or not in-game XMB’s full compatible. While it’s expected that the the new menu system, in-game messaging, and so forth, will work with virtually all games, for a minority of titles the current black menu screen will be retained. It’s not known yet which games, if any, won’t be able to use in-game XMB.
  • The user-music functionality is only included in the new development tools, which have now gone out to coders. This means that existing games won’t support it unless they’re patched. That’s right: you won’t be able to play GTA IV with your own music unless Rockstar updates the game, if what we’ve been told this morning is true.
  • Same for Trophies. They tools required to add these are only just in the hands of developers, which means it’s going to be some time before you see the feature appear in a major game.
  • Some aspects of the XMB, such as the photo viewer, won’t be available in-game after the 2.40 Firmware update. If you select these features in-game, you’ll be asked if you want to drop out of your game to access them.

MGS4 to feature scenes from earlier games?

Barney Hapgood | May 1, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Konami have released a video showing new gameplay footage of MGS4. In what appears to be a dream, Snake is seen sneaking through a location from the original MGS on the PSone. Whether this will be a one off flashback or you can play more of these old scenes remains to be seen, but it doesn’t look like it’s the exact same timeframe as the original as there are no patrolling soldiers or any enemy activity.

Here’s hoping this isn’t a one off, I’d love to play some snippets of MGS with updated graphics, and as its in Snake’s head they can mix it up and add some crazy psychedelic stuff.

There’s no wait like Home: open beta delayed again…

Sean Millar | April 22, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Do you remember a time when release dates actually meant something?

Nope, me neither…

I don’t think I can actually remember Home having an official release date but I do know that Sony is one to make exaggerated claims. This time around, Sony has released a statement detailing that Home won’t be open to public beta testing until some time this Autumn. Here is what they had to say:

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it will expand the Closed Beta testing for PLAYSTATION®Home in Summer 2008, inviting a further number of registrants from the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3®) users. Following completion of the Expanded Closed Beta test, the PLAYSTATION Home Open Beta service will commence in Fall 2008.

PS3 GTA IV Bundle Confirmed

Barney Hapgood | April 15, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

gtabundleI’m still wondering why anyone would buy GTA on the PS3 with the 360 offering extra content in a few months, but for those who think the time is right to jump on the Sony bandwagon, retailers have confirmed they will be offering a bundle on the 29th April. For £299.99 £319.99 you’ll get yourself a 40gb PS3 with the game and one Sixaxis (surely they could stretch to a DualShock 3?). My excitement for this game is getting a little out of control and with news of stock running out fast I’m off to pre-order the limited edition.

Rock Band: EU Gets official (CRAZY) price and release date….

Sean Millar | April 10, 2008

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Lets get down to business, Firstly It will be available on Xbox 360 On may 23rd but gamers hoping to rock out on their PS3’s and Wii’s will have to wait till around summer time…

The initial price will be £130.00 for the instrument bundle which is a little damn pricey as it is but it doesn’t even include the Freaking game, Gamers will have to shell out another £50 quid on top of that just for the game…In my opinion this is bloody ridiculous i mean i could buy an actual guitar and a cheap amp for that price or maybe even an Xbox 360 or a Wii and still have money left over to buy a sandwich…I didn’t know i had to be an actual rock-star to afford this god damn game…

Firstly we have to wait several months for the game to be released over here but then we have to pay a price that is practically double what the Americans have paid, I HATE YOU EA!!!!

Final Say: Import the whole bundle from the US, You will save a lot of money and get it much sooner…

Playstation Store actually good?

Barney Hapgood |

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Playstation.Blog have posted a video walkthrough of the revamped Playstation Store and although previously hinting about the interface being quicker, it seems they have integrated the whole store into the PS3, ala Xbox Live, it is no longer web browser based. It seems quicker and much better organised but its a shame its taken them over a year to essentially copy the layout of the 360’s store. Check it out:

Sean Millar |

del.icio.us Digg Facebook StumbleUpon

Burnout ParadiseThe guys over at Criterion Games have annouced an update to their scorching game Burnout: Paradise, This update will be free and available on both Xbox Live and PSN from the 24th of april…

Here is the list of problems it will fix and what it will add on to the game:

The Top 10 problems reported by you have been fixed, these are:

  • PS3 game can crash when a player is taken down and the player that has performed the Takedown leaves the game.
  • The game indefinitely displays “Connecting to Paradise City Servers” if it’s having problems communicating with the rebroadcast server.
  • Disconnecting the controller before a race begins can mean that race timings can be manipulated with players who didn’t cross the line first being awarded the win.
  • Repeatedly joining and leaving a game with 8 players can cause the game to hang.
  • Hammering the A (360) or X (PS3) after unlocking a car can cause the game to hang.
  • East Crawford and Watt St achievements cannot be achieved if the player goes online and sets road rules before attempting them.
  • Audio distortion when using 5.1 / DTS and looking back at the car.
  • Enhanced 360 streaming performance stops instances where the game seems to pause for a second or so.
  • Total time driven in player stats would stick at 145 hours.
